Urban Mapping has developed a unique data set based on a proprietary methodology that incorporates research into spatial cognition. This has been married to geographic information systems (GIS) to deliver aggregated neighborhood-level data.
UMI's Urbanware Neighborhood boundaries product is a geospatial database of neighborhood and community-level data. The result is a powerful tool for performing local search and retrieving location-based information. Because ZIP codes were originally created to assist letter carriers with US mail delivery, they are woefully inadequate for identifying how people conceive of informal space.
Locally-consumed media vary across specific markets, reflecting regional, cultural and historical biases. By understanding these nuances, idioms and colloquialisms, UMI develops products that serve local needs across a broad user base.
Data are culled from thousands of primary and secondary sources. Polygons are drawn for every latitude and longitude coordinate pair. Boundaries are spatially-encoded using GIS and are available in a variety of data formats. Current coverage includes over 1,000 municipalities in the US and 120 cities across Canada and Europe.
